Prevalence of postpartum depression and some related factors in mothers whose children are being treated at the neonatal department, Nam Dinh Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital in 2024

Abstract

Objective: Describe the current status of postpartum depression and some related factors of mothers with children being treated at the neonatal department at Nam Dinh Provincial Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Research subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive research design. The survey was conducted for 200 mothers who directly cared for their children being treated as inpatients at the Neonatal Department of Nam Dinh Provincial Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Using the EPDS toolkit, a standardized toolkit to assess the rate of postpartum depression, data were collected from April to June 2024. Research results: The rate of postpartum depression in women in the study area was 29.5%. Mothers had poor health during pregnancy, were dissatisfied with their marriage, lived in the city, had less than a high school education , and had an unplanned pregnancy with ORs of 18.939; 6.685; 5.712; 5.283; 3.756 compared to other mothers, the difference is statistically significant with p < 0.05. Mothers with children with birth weight <2500g, serious illness, children refusing to breastfeed (refuse to eat formula), children crying a lot, children staying in hospital for more than 15 days, mothers with 3 or more children have ORs of 12.725; 11.671; 9.046; 5.300; 10.169; 6.644); 4.330756 compared to mothers with other children, the difference is statistically significant with p < 0.05. Mothers who live with their husband’s family, are not satisfied with their married life, have a difficult economic situation, or have family conflicts are all factors that increase the risk of depression with p, OR respectively (p < 0.001, OR = 2.737); (p < 0.01, OR = 4.376). Conclusion: The risk of postpartum depression is a health issue that deserves attention and research, in order to find solutions as well as treatment, prevention and prenatal education, as well as to attract the attention of families, medical staff and the community
