Abstract

Objectives: To describe academicmotivation among undergraduate nursing students at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Method: A descriptive study was conducted on 213 nursing students from 1st to 4th year at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacyby using the Academic Motivation Scale AMS-C28 College version and accepted by Vallerand. Data was analysed by using SPSS 13.0 software. Results: The percentage of students with “good academicmotivation” was 60.1%. The overall motivation (Self Determination Index - SDI)ranged from -10.92 to 13.38 scoreswith a median of 5.08. The median of the Intrinsic motivation - to know and the Extrinsic motivation –to identified were the highest (4.75 score). The median of the overall motivation of the first year was the highestand decreaseding older batch, significantly at level of p <0.0001. Conclusion: The proportion of acedemic motivation among undergraduate nursing students is not high and decreased gradually fromthe first year to fourth year.It is needed to develop specific strategies yearly in order to promote students’ motivation as well as to have a further study determiningthe influenced factors to the motivation among these student.
