FACTORS ASSOCIATED TO BREASTFEEDING IN THE FIRST HOUR OF LIFE ON MOTHERS HAVING UNDER-SIX-MONTH BABIES IN 4 COMMUNES IN NAM DINH CITY IN 2018

Abstract

Objective: To identify some factors related to initiate early breastfeeding(within one hour after birth) on mothers having under-six-month-babies. Method: A cross-sectional study using a constructed questionnaire for face to face interviews was conducted among 209 mothers having under-six-month-babies in 4 communes in Nam Dinh city. Results: The majority(81.8%) of mothers aged 21 to 35. The secondary school is the most prevalent among mothers, at 34.4%. Women with vaginal births were predominate (70.3%), and the caesarean section rate is 29.7%. The percentage for initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of life was 58.4% of mothers, and the remainder (41.6%) did not. We found some associated factors with initiate breastfeeding were: types of delivery (OR= 16.6), prenatal visit (OR= 4.7), receiving advice of using formula milk from family members (OR= 4.7), and supports from medical staff after birth (OR=3.8). Conclusion: Some indicated associated factors that support initiate breastfeeding practice of mothers are types of delivery, types of delivery, prenatal visit, and supports from medical staff after birth. A prevention factor of initiate early breastfeeding was receiving advice of feeding newborn by formula milk from family members.
