Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the primary caregiver’s change in knowledge about care for schizophrenic patients at home after educational intervention. Method: Educational intervention with before and after comparison of over 70 primary caregivers at the Mental Hospital in Nam Dinh province on knowledge of caring for schizophrenic patients at home with a set of questions prepared in advance at 3 times: Before intervention intervention, 1 day after intervention and 1 month after intervention. Results: Before the intervention, the average score of general knowledge about caring for schizophrenia patients at home was 5.33 ± 1.13 points (on a scale of 10). After one day intervention, the average score of general knowledge was 9.29 ± 0.48 points (up 3.96 points). After the intervention 1 month, the average score of general knowledge decreased but remained high at 8.73 ± 0.48 (increasing 3.4 points compared to before the intervention). The difference is statistically significant with p <0.001. Conclusion: Primary caregiver’s knowledge about caring for schizophrenic patients at home before the intervention is still limited, but it has improved significantly after the intervention.
