The real situation and factors related to grade point average of students of 14th intake at Nam Dinh university of Nursing in 2018 – 2019

Abstract

Objective: To describe the real situation and some factors related to the grade point average (GPA)of students 14th course, Nam Dinh University of Nursing in 2018 - 2019.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was implemented among 247 full-time undergraduate nursing students, 14th course, Nam Dinh University of Nursing from September 2019 to May 2020 by self-filling in the designed questionnaire. Research using School Impression Toolkit, Learning Motivation Toolkit, Student Learning Method Toolkit, Academic Advisor Role Toolkit.

Results: The grade point average belong to the students’ cumulative scores for the academic year 2018-2019 we are majority of the average level (52.2%), the weak level (27.9%) and no student got the good level or - excellent level (0%). The factors as gender, class staff, part-time work did not have a statistically significant relationship (p>0.05) with the student’s full year cumulative score. Academic impression has no statistically significant relationship (p>0.05) with the student’s full year cumulative score. Learning motivation, learning methods, and the role of academic advisor have a statistically significant relationship (p<0.05) the student’s full year cumulative score.

Conclusion: The learning outcomes of students at the University of Nursing are still quite low and depend on learning motivation, learning methods and the role of academic advisor. Therefore, students need to clearly define their learning goals, motivations and learning methods, and the school needs to build a model of academic advisors to orient their careers and make specific plans for each student
