Abstract

Objectives: Describe knowledge, attitudes and identify some factors related to nursing students’ knowledge and attitudes towards the older people.

Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with a sample size of 229 nursing students in Duy Tan University.

Results: Nursing students’ knowledge about the older people was low (Mean ± SD= 26.87 ± 4.88), students have a positive attitude towards the older people (Mean ± SD=125.41 ± 11.55 ). Factors related to students’ knowledge about the older people include: gender, school year, students who have/are living with the older people, experience of taking care of the older people (p<0.05). Factors related to students’ attitudes towards the older people include: years of study, have/are living with the older people, want to live with parents/parents-in-law in the future, experience of caring for older people, want to take care of the older people after graduation (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Nursing students’ knowledge about the older people is low, students have a positive attitude towards the older people. Interventions are needed to improve nursing students’ knowledge of the older people.
