This paper explores the indications of Japanese culture in The Old Capital by Kawabata, with typical emblems: old capital, kimono, cherry blossom. Based on the
concept of artistic creation and the desire to create cultural values via the writer’s symbols, the approach of selecting and decoding emblems in literary writings is appropriate to help readers comprehend the beauty of Japanese culture and people.
