Abstract
English is considered an international language and is essential in global communication. Proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing is a key factor and is necessary for students majoring in English Language. Although many studies on language skills, little research focuses on English Language majors' difficulties in developing reading skills, especially the disparity between practicing reading through exercises and actual reading. The current study investigates the challenges faced by English language majors at a university in Ho Chi Minh City in their Advanced Reading course. A total of 111 students participated in the survey. SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyze the data collected from the study. The research results show that students face challenges in learning reading skills, including vocabulary, background knowledge, reading comprehension skills, and learning motivation. The study also emphasizes the importance of reconsidering teaching and learning methods. Specifically, there is a need to enhance the activation of learners’ background knowledge. Achieving this will help students improve their reading comprehension skills and more comprehensively develop their language acquisition abilities.Downloads
