Using “Literature circles” – An effective reading comprehension teaching method in Vietnam Language Arts

Abstract
Using “Literature circles” is an effective reading comprehension teaching method that is widely applied in some countries with a competency-based literacy curriculum, however, it is still quite new to Vietnamese schools. The article presents the concept and analyzes the advantages of this teaching method in skill training and competence development for students. These are: promoting the initiative and independence of students; focusing on skill training for a variety of students throughout the activity process; creating a discussion and interactive environment for students to share their feedback on the text; creating opportunities for students to really become readers by experiencing different reading roles. The article also indicates some noteworthy points when applying “Literature circles” in Vietnamese school context.
