Nutritional status and predictive model of underweight in adolescents at Phung Thuong Secondery School, Hanoi
Abstract
Underweight cause significant impact on the development of adolescents. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of underweight and malnutrition among 11-14 year-old aldolescents at Phung Thuong Secondary School in Hanoi and to develop a predictive model of underweight in children at this age. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 31 adolescents to classify nutritional status using the IOTF 2007 criteria. Then, a case-control study was conducted on 50 underweight and 246 normal weight adolescents using IOTF criteria. The percentage of underweight children is 16%. Dietary factors (OR = 0.4, P = 0.013), sweet food (OR = 0.4, P = 0.034), fast food preference (OR = 0.3, P = 0.012) reduce the risk of underweight in adolescents. The frequency of consumption of carbonated beveragesand animal organs increased risk of underweight in children (OR = 2.6, P = 0.013; OR = 6.6; P = 0.016, respectively). Predictors of underweightin children include age, frequency of consumption of carbonated beveragesand animal organs.Downloads
