“EACH”, “ONE” AND SYNTAX STRUCTURES CONTAINING “EACH - EACH/ONE” IN VIETNAMESE SENTENCES

Abstract
The article discusses the differentperspectives and explanations for the classificationof “each” and “one” in the Vietnamese word classsystem. According to these perspectives, “each”and “one” can be classified as adjectives,demonstratives, nouns, numerals, adverbs, orfunctional words, and they can belong to either thelexical word or functional word category. Someauthors have provided brief explanations of themeaning of these two words, but the syntacticstructure of sentences containing “each-one/every”has not been analyzed. Based on the analysis, thearticle argues that “each” and “one” are bothquantifiers, and they belong to the functional wordcategory. In addition, “one” can additionally beclassified as a numeral and belong to the lexicalword category. The pair of coordinatingquantifiers “each - each/one” can be used togetherto mark the boundary between the theme and rhemeof a sentence. In this case, “each” marks the theme,and “each/one” marks the rheme of the samegrammatical level. Additionally, when used alone,“each” or “every one” also marks the theme
