Literature review of research on Nguyen Dinh Chieu – looking back and forward

Abstract

This paper uses history-function method to review the research of Nguyen Dinh Chieu from late of the nineteenth century until now and point out the main trends in different areas of the country in each period. From this literature review, we find out that the researchers have paid much more attention to the patriotic and heroic aspects of the poet’s literary works, however, much less attention was paid to the anticolonial side. Nguyen Dinh Chieu was regarded as a great patriotic poet in pre-colonial era by many researchers and readers, but there are few people see him as a pioneer of Vietnamese anticolonial writer.
