Abstract

This author studies the activities of bishop Pellerin to gain religious freedom in Vietnam and France in the middle of the 19th century (1843-1859). The purpose of this study is to clarify the activities of bishop Pellerin, a French clergy missionary, to gain religious freedom in Vietnam and France and the historical background - the purpose and the effects of his activities. Activities of bishop Pellerin gaining religious freedom are representative proves of collusion between the two forces: colonialism and religion in the war that France of colonialism had invaded Vietnam. The result of this study will contribute to help us to understand deeply the event that Vietnam had conflicted with France due to the problems of missions in the middle of the 19th century.
