The avoidence system (Tương tỵ) of King Sejong’s reign (1418-1460) and some comparisons with the avoidence system (Hồi tỵ) of King Le Thanh Tong’s reign (1470-1497)

Abstract

The avoidence system in Korea started from Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) and renovated during the King Sejong's reign of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), codified in Gyeongguk Daejeon in 1476. In some cases, the avoidence system is widely applied, and in case of military affairs or specialized field were excluded from application. The avoidance system played a positive roles to strengthen the throne and prevent misconduct in public officials. But some times it makes public officials to do their work poorly by making an excuse to be a subject to application, and some times it was constraint factors to assign personnel to positions according to their ability. The avoidence system in Dai Viet started from the King Le Thanh Tong regin. The remarkable difference in the avoidence system between King Sejong’s regin and Le Thanh Tong’s reign is avoidence system in the field of a local officials in King Le Thanh Tong’s reign more important than.
