Abstract

The Northwestern mountainous region of Nghe An province has outstanding advantages such as a strategic geographic location for transportation, fertile red basaltic soil resources, and vast terrain suitable for farming, industrial crops, and large-scale fruit trees. In addition to the prominent advantages of land resources, the region also has some advantages to develop industries (minerals, forestry), commerce, and tourism. However, it remains a slow-developing area in terms of the economy. The total value of production in the region is still relatively small compared to the entire province (contributing only about 12% to the province's total value of production, while its population accounts for 18.7% of the province's total population). The growth rate of the region's value of production is also slower than that of the entire province. In 2022, the region's production value only increased by 10.94% compared to 2021 and 1.77 times higher than in 2016, while the figures for the whole province were 11.9% and 2.43 times higher. The speed of economic restructuring by sector is also slow (in 2022, agricultural production still accounts for about 27%); and the territorial economic structure is also significantly polarized, with the area with the largest value of production (Nghia Dan district) being nearly 10 times greater than the area with the smallest value of production (Que Phong district).
