Abstract

Along with Son La reservoir, theoretically the upstream reservoirs can keep the peak flood level of the 500-year return period flood at Hanoi by 13.40 m without applying the flood diversion and slowing system. However, the duration of high water level at Hanoi lasts for several days which is a big pressure for the safety of Red River and Thai Binh dykes. Besides, with all the combinations of flood, the peak flood levels at Hanoi are approximately 13.40 m which is not safe for the remaining areas of Red River Delta. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to release water and remain the regular runoff in Day river during flood season. The article presents the results of application of MIKE11 model to assess the effect on the ability of flood drainage and improve the environment by keeping regular runoff in Day river.
