Abstract

In many developed countries, social risk and individual risk have been adopted in assessing the shore protection systems, and determining the safety standards. Viet Nam assigns the failure probabilities of flood protection structures only taking into account the general size and population of the protected areas. The paper aims to estimate the personal risk of people living along the coast under attack of storms, tropical depression as well as flooding due to dike breaching. Design probability of sea dikes are then appraised and proposed to meet the requirement of personally acceptable risk.
