Some findings of the study on the issue of water pollution and protection of water quality of Nam Thai Binh irrigation system
Abstract
Kien Giang river of Nam Thai Binh irrigation system is the core irrigation and drainage river for agricultural production area in the Northern coastal region of Thai Binh province. The river downstream is an important cultivation area and a host of a number of rural and urban residential areas, concentrated industrial zones. In the last few years this region enjoys rapid economic development and this has led to the fact that Kien Giang river daily receives large volume of pollutants due to waste water from residential areas, industrial zones and agricultural production, with the waste water being largely untreated and directly discharged into the river system. This has exacerbated the water pollution problem and posed significant impacts on the living conditions of the population and on the socio-economic development of the whole area. This article presented outcomes of the assessment and analysis of the polluting sources, estimation of pollutant (BOD5) load discharged into Kien Giang river within the catchment area of Nam Thai Binh irrigation system. It conducted estimation of the water and pollutant BOD5 balances in the river according to some irrigation scenarios and different options for the control of the pollutant sources. Some recommendations were provided regarding the protection of the water quality and easing the pollution level of the water in the river and canals of the irrigation system.
