The study and evaluation of eutrofication in a shallow lake in Japan

Abstract

     The eutrophication of water bodies occurs due to over-enrichment of nutrients, causing uncontrolled growth of algae, development of cyanobacteria, toxic algae and decreased dissolved oxygen concentration in the water due to decomposition of organic matters, increasing water treatment costs, making the water bodies gradually become shallower and shallower, affecting water supply. Understanding the characteristics of eutrophication developments in the water bodies is one of the scientific basis needed for proposing management solutions as well as water quality control. In that sense, this study provides some preliminary results of the study on investigation of the eutrophication through indicators such as Total Nitrogen/Total Phosphorus ratio (TN/TP), Trophic State Index (TSI) ... in Okubo pond of Kyushu Prefecture, Japan.
