Abstract

Coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface play an extremely important role for local socioeconomic development and marine economy. Nowadays, the increase of extreme weather events, natural disasters and environmental pollution affects local people's land use, especially for aquaculture activities. Tien Hai district (Thai Binh province) with advantages of 23 km of coastline and over 5,000 km square of coastal mudflats acquires strengths for the development of marine economy. In recent years, local government has implemented many policies to exploit these types of land for economic development. However along with socioeconomic development, coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface tend to face soil degradation and unsustainable use. This article focuses on analyzing the current status of land use of coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface, related policies as well as impacts on the use of coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface in Tien Hai district, thereby recognizes the pros and cons in using coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface to propose solutions aiming at improving the land use efficiency of coastal mudflats and coastal land with water surface in Tien Hai district.
