Abstract
Citizen science is a branch of science that involves the citizens in the scientific research process at many different levels. Currently, citizen science has been widely and successfully applied in the environmental field in many countries around the world. This paper focuses on the experience of applying citizen science in monitoring air quality in European countries and the USA, thereby drawing some lessons for Vietnam. Study results show that citizen science has great promise in monitoring air quality, raising public awareness about the environment and contributing to evidence based policy making. However, to apply community science in the Vietnamese context, we need to pay attention to: institutionalizing community science, promulgating a guiding framework, funding citizen science projects, and attracting participation of community members, socio-political organizations; ensuring accuracy and reliability of the data.
