Ghenh Coc reef on Bach Dang river bed has recently been considered as an important natural obstacle contributing to the great victory against the Ghengis Khan’s navy on Bach Dang river on April 9, 1288. With the assumption that the topographic and hydrological conditions in the battle fields were similar to that of the present day, the calculation results of this article show that the role of Ghenh Coc reefs in this battle field is not as pivotally important as previously described. With a tidal level of 1.5m, the rate of boats with a draft of 2.5m becoming stranded is 5.4%; with a boat draft 2m the rate is 0.7%; and boats with a draft of 1.5m and 1.0m did not run aground. With a tidal level of 1.2m, the rate of boats with a draft of 2.5m becoming stranded was 11.7%; 2m draft boats had a rate of 2.9%, and boats with drafts of 1.5m and 1.0m did not run aground. With a tidal level of 0.9m, the rate of boats with a draft of 2.5 m becoming stranded is 20.3%; boats with a draft of 2m had a rate of 7.5%; boats with a draft of 1.5m had a rate of 1.4%, and boats with a draft of 1.0m did not run aground. In addition, considering the ancient geographical conditions of more than seven centuries ago, the Ghenh Coc might appear narrower or may not appear on the river bed at all.
