GIS IN DOMESTIC SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: APPLICABILITY AND PRACTICE EXPERIENCE

Abstract

Geographical information system (GIS) has been widely applied in environmental management of domestic solid waste management in the world as well as in Vietnam. This is an effective tool to support activities of collecting and transporting domestic solid waste; help optimize the route of collection and transportation efficiently and economically; help choose the location for construction of landfills and solid waste treatment plants to minimize negative impacts on the environment. The article introduces practical experiences and applicability of GIS in domestic solid waste management and proposes appropriate solutions.
