Abstract

This study examines the impact of despotic leadership on employees’ basic psychological need frustration and quiet quitting. It further investigates the mediating role of basic psychological need frustration in explaining the mechanism through which despotic leadership fosters quiet quitting behavior. Data were collected from 244 banking employees in Vietnam and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that despotic leadership is positively associated with both basic psychological need frustration and quiet quitting, while basic psychological need frustration significantly predicts quiet quitting and mediates the relationship between despotic leadership and quiet quitting. This study contributes to the fields of leadership and organizational psychology while offering practical implications for organizations in creating psychologically supportive work environments, fostering positive leadership styles, and mitigating the tendency toward quiet quitting.
