SEMANTIC FEATURES OF CHARACTER NAMES IN THE WORK “FAMILY” BY BA JIN

Abstract

Characters are considered the soul of a literary work, which are represented in many ways such as appearance, personality, conversation, gesture and action. Each character is given a specific name that helps the readers gain the very first information about that character. Giving names to characters is a crucial step in the process of composing a literary work, and thus authors often devote a great deal of effort to this step. The article employs such research methods and techniques as statistics, description, and analysis to highlight the semantic features of character names in the work Family by Ba Jin, whereby emphasizing the important role of character names in expressing author’s ideas and intention in the work.
