Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates the effectiveness of role-play activities in developing English
speaking skills for Grade 5 students at Phu Thuong Primary School within the framework of
Communicative Language Teaching. An experimental design was conducted with two classes: the
experimental group participated in structured role-play activities, while the control group followed
traditional speaking tasks. The findings revealed that the experimental group showed significant
improvement in fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary use, accuracy, and interaction skills. Students
also demonstrated increased learning motivation and reduced anxiety when speaking English. The
study confirms that role-play is an effective method for enhancing communicative competence
among primary school students.
Key words: Role-play, speaking skills, primary education, communicative competence, Phu
