Abstract

Quotative  frame  of  direct  speech  in  Nguyen  Huy  Thiep's  short  stories  has certain characteristics  in position as well as syntactic and semantic structure. Firstly, about the position of quotative frame: it has not only three positions: before, in and after the direct speech but also a special one: it is located both before and inside the direct speech. Secondly, the quotative frame is mainly a simple sentence with two components, subject and verb. In a quotative frame, Nguyen Huy Thiep used words in a minimum way. Just sentences like: He says, Mr Mong says, the woman replies etc. The quotative frame rarely has additional factors to  comment  or  describe.  Nguyen  Huy  Thiep  seems  to  give  up  that  "judgement  right"  to readers. It is the thing that makes Nguyen Huy Thiep different and attractive in aspects  of the word.
