POLITENESS EXPRESSING IN VERBAL CRITICISM IN VIETNAMESE AND ENGLISH

Abstract

In this article we describe politeness markers and assess the polite level of the verbal criticism strategies (in everyday life context quoted from English and Vietnamese modern short stories). Results showed that indirectness is not always the same variables with politeness. This is shown very clearly in Vietnamese language. All these similarities and differences are due to the characteristics of the verbal criticism itself , specific cultural and linguistic forms of these two languages.
