Abstract

This study addresses to thanking behaviours in Vietnamese and Australian English. The data of the study were collected through field observations, a metapragmatic questionnaire and retrospective interviews. Results show some considerable differences between the two languages in the thanking behaviours among strangers (in routine service encounters) and among intimates. These differences may result from the differences in flie cultural perspectives
