Current situation of teaching Chinese and Tamil in Malaysia schools

Abstract

    Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multilingual and multi-cultural country with three nain ethnic communities: Malay, Chinese and Indian (of which the majority are Tamils). Although, Malay was declared by consitution as the national language, but the Malaysian language policy does not take aways die rightful position of other languages in the society. This article addresses the following issues: 1/The legal basis for inclusion of Chinese and Famil in teaching within schools in Malaysia; 2/Current situation of teaching Chinese and lamil in Malaysian schools; 3/Overall assessment.
