Abstract
Abstract: Amid the expansion of English-medium instruction (EMI) programs in Vietnamese
universities, assessing language outcomes has become essential. This study explores students’
perspectives on achieving language objectives and the language-related factors that influence their
attainment in EMI courses at Thuongmai University, Hanoi. Data were collected from 109 students
through closed- and open-ended questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and content
analysis. Findings indicate that students held high expectations for improving their English
proficiency, and their perceived attainment in all language skills was relatively high, though not fully
aligned with initial expectations. Four key language-related factors including the lecturer’s use of
English, opportunities for English use, language learning support, and language learning environment
were positively rated. The study highlights the importance of enhancing opportunities for English
use, strengthening lecturers’ language teaching competencies, and fostering a learning environment
that encourages academic communication.
