Abstract

National greenhouse gas inventories for Viet Nam have been implemented in recent years and reported domestically and internationally. This paper examines the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions from Energy sector in Viet Nam for the year 2014 by Tier 1 method in accordant to revised 1996 IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Guidance and 2000 IPCC Good Practical Guide on National Greenhouse Gas Inventory with top-down national statistics. The results indicate that, with a top-down approach and data source, the GHG emissions in 2014 were about 171.6 MtCO2 equivalent. This is about 0.4% lower than the sectoral approach and 8.2% lower than the bottom-up approach. With very little difference in results, simple calculation methods and easily accessible official data sources, this approach can be used to regularly update national GHG emissions for energy and other sectors to serve the state management and policy development.
