Abstract

The drivers of precipitation variability in the Viet Nam are complex, and they have considerable impact on the economic and social development activites. While interannual variability has been studied intensively, relatively less study has focused on intra-seasonal variability in precipitation, even though this variability can be critical for agricultural activities. In this study, we examine the impact of the fluctuating summer index (BSISO) on the change in rainfall in Viet Nam (June to October). The research results show that the rainfall extremes increase in the North Central region (BTB) and the Southern Central Highlands (TNNB) in phases 4 to phase 6 of BSISO-1, and the Northern region (BB) increases in phases 3 and 4. In phases 1 and 2 of BSISO-2, extreme rainfall in the BTB and TNNB increased, and the BB had a negligible increase in probability.
