Abstract

Backround: Diabetes is a common and rapidly growing chronic non-communicable disease in the world in the 21st century, of which Vietnam is one of four countries in the region Southeast Asia has the highest rate of type 2 diabetes with about 3.5 million incidence. Patients' belief in medicine is positively related to medication adherence. Medication adherence has been recognized as the key to optimal disease control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Health education plays a role in improving patient adherence to medication.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nurses' health education intervention in changing beliefs in medication, medication adherence and fasting blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes at the Southern Regional General Hospital of Binh Thuan province from December 2021 to May 2022.

Methods: This intervention research applied a semi-experimental design, and conducted assessment at before and after intervention. 95 patients aged 18 years or older were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the Southern Regional General Hospital of Binh Thuan province from December 2021 to May 2022. Sampling procedure were performedbefore intervention. Conducting health education and re-evaluating the effectiveness of health education after 1 month of patient follow-up were implemented as per research procedure.

Results: Positive changes appeared according to most of the criteria for evaluating medication adherence. The average medication adherence score after intervention increased compared to before intervention (from 5.72 ± 1.86 to 6.37 ± 1.36) with p <0.001. The average specific-necessary score after intervention increased (from 18.51 ± 2.35 to 19.69 ± 1.91) and was statistically significant with p <0.001. The difference in specialty-concern after intervention was not significant. Average fasting blood sugar after intervention statistically significantly decreased (from 137.29 ± 33.98 to 123.97 ± 24.53). In particular, the nursing intervention program did not change the blood sugar of the NB group with pre-intervention blood sugar ≤ 130 mg/dl but significantly reduced the blood sugar of the group with blood sugar > 130 mg/dl before intervention.

Conclusion: Health education program of nurses in changing beliefs about medicine, medication compliance increased after intervention, fasting blood sugar in type 2 diabetic patients decreased after health education intervention.
