Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the preoperative malnutrition in patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer surgery using nutritional risk screening tool 2002 (NRS 2002) and explore the factors affecting preoperative nutritional status.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the patients who underwent elective colorectal cancer surgery from January to June 2023 at University Medical Center. The prima-ry outcome was the incidence rate of preoperative malnutrition by NRS 2002.

Results: This study included 100 patients with 58 males, mean age: 64 ± 12 (25-92). The in-cidence rate of preoperative malnutrition by NRS 2002 was 48%, in which mild-to-moderate malnutritional rate was 95.8%, severe malnutritional rate was 4.2%. Patients with physical sta-tus according to ASA increased in proportions at each level, which lead to the increasing risk of preoperative malnutrition compared to the other groups ([aOR 3.21]; CI 95% 95% 1.15 – 8.95; p=0.02).

Conclusion: The incidence rate of preoperative malnutrition according to NRS 2002 in colorectal cancer patients was 48%, and related to physical status according to ASA.
