DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, STRESS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG STUDENTS AT HUNG VUONG HIGH SCHOOL IN BINH DUONG PROVINCE

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress and associated factors among students at Hung Vuong High School in Binh Duong Province in 2024.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used multistage sampling to recruit 662 students. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of personal characteristics, family characteristics, school characteristics, and other components to assess education stress (ESSA), physical activity (GPAQv2) and depression, anxiety, stress (DASS-21).

Results: The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress was 70.5%, 58.5%, and 54.4%, respectively. Academic pressure was associated with depression, anxiety, and stress. Students whose “mother were employed” have had 0.84 times (95%CI:0.73-0.98), and “were businesswomen” hadve 0.78 times (95%CI:0.65-0.95), and those whose “mother were workers” hadve 0.79 times (95%CI:0.65-0.95) more likely to haveodds of developing depression compared to those with unemployed mother. Students with poor conduct were 1.41 times more likely to have anxiety compared to those with good conduct (95%CI:1,18-1,65). Those who lived in dormitories or relatives’ houses were 1.26 times more likely to have stress compared to their counterparts (95%CI:1,04-1,52).

Conclusion: Students need to balance study, recreation, and rest. Mothers and other family members should positively listen, share and provide support to help address psychological issues. Teachers and schools should establish psychological support programs and organize extracurricular activities and enhance social connections to reduce academic pressure. Additionally, they should create a positive learning environment and provide psychological support for students with poor conducts.
