THE CORRELATION BETWEEN INTERNET ADDICTION AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN HO CHI MINH CITY

Abstract

Objectives: Internet addiction is increasingly prevalent and is a concerning issue among young people. Emotional intelligence is considered a crucial factor in predicting addiction tendency. Therefore, determining the prevalence of internet addiction and identifying related factors are essential to implement timely interventions aimed at improving students' well-being.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 students of Faculty of Public Health at University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City from October 2023 to May 2024. Data was taken by a stratified method through a set of self administered questions about demographics, internet addiction and emotional intelligence.

Results: The prevalence of internet addiction among Public Health students was 59,7%. The average score of emotional intelligence was 121,0 ± 11,8, showing a negative correlation with internet addiction (PR=0,99, p=0,001). Additionally, the study identified a correlation between internet addiction and factors such as academic pressure and using the internet for learning.

Conclusion: The rate of Internet addiction in students of the Faculty of Public Health was relatively high and their average emotional intelligence score was moderate. Measures should be taken to improve emotional intelligence and timely intervention of risk factors to minimize internet addiction.
