LAPAROSCOPIC COLECTOMY WITH INTRACORPOREAL ANASTOMOSIS IS NOT POPULAR IN VIETNAM: COST OR HABITS
Abstract
Objective: Laparoscopic colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis is very popular in the world while very few studies in Vietnam. Is it a matter of technique, cost, routine or something else? This study can contribute to answer this question.Methods: A retrospective review of experience in performing laparoscopic colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis at Gia Dinh People's Hospital from 2013 to July 2021. Survey on the preferences of surgeons at Gia Dinh People's Hospital in perform the anastomosis technique. Review of the international medical literature to grasp the trend of intracorporeal anastomosis and extracorporeal anastomosis after laparoscopic colectomy. Review of medical literatures of Vietnam, reports at national surgical conferences and theses at medical schools on this topic.
Results: Intracorporeal anastomosis was performed more frequently than extracorporeal anastomosis in the last 2 years (104 versus 89 cases) at Gia Dinh People’s hospital. The number of surgeons performing or tending to perform increases gradually. There are very few domestic studies about totally laparoscopic colectomy.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis has potential advantages. The technique is not too difficult and the cost is not too high. What remains is the need to change a habit.
