Abstract

Background: Mental health is a critical aspect in the management of all chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The comorbidity of T2DM with psychosocial issues can complicate treatment and disease management. Addressing mental health needs is essential in the comprehensive care of patients with T2DM.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression, as well as associated factors, among patients with T2DM at the outpatient clinic of Tan Uyen Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 310 patients with T2DM at Tan Uyen Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City from January to March 2025. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was employed to assess levels of anxiety and depression. Chi-square tests were used to examine associations, and multivariate logistic regression was applied to adjust for confounding variables.

Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with T2DM was 38.7% and 44.5%, respectively. Anxiety was significantly associated with gender, occupation, economic status, insulin injection therapy, and fasting venous blood glucose levels. Depression was significantly associated with exercise frequency, duration of diabetes, severity of comorbidities, fasting venous blood glucose levels, and anxiety.

Conclusions: A comprehensive approach to diabetes care should include not only glycemic control but also early screening and intervention for common mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Integrating psychological assessment into routine diabetes care is a necessary strategy to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients.
