Abstract

Objective: The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is considered an effective method for evaluating the clinical skills of nursing students, ensuring objectivity and fairness. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of nursing students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (UMP), regarding the organization of OSCE, while comparing these findings with international studies conducted since 2020.

Methods: 119 third-year nursing students participated in the OSCE were included in a cross-sectional study combining quantitative surveys and qualitative analysis. The questionnaire included a Likert scale and open-ended questions. Data were analyzed using SPSS and thematic analysis.

Results: Fairness: 65% of students perceived OSCE as fair; however, concerns were raised about inconsistency in evaluations among examiners. Knowledge and Skill Coverage: 70% of students believed OSCE effectively covered essential skills, though some faced difficulties with complex stations due to time constraints. Exam Stress: 45% of students reported feeling stressed, primarily due to limited time at each station. Logistics and Organization: The organization was evaluated as positive, helping to reduce anxiety and enhance the overall examination experience.

Conclusion: The results align with international studies on OSCE, highlighting common issues such as stress, time pressure, and inconsistencies in evaluations. Nonetheless, students highly valued the fairness and comprehensive coverage of knowledge in the exam.

Recommendations: The OSCE at UMP was well-received but requireds improvements, such as: more time allowance at complex stations, more preparatory and review sessions before the exam, further research on stress-inducing factors to provide better psychological support for students.
