CLINICAL SURVEY AND EVALUATION OF TREATMENT AND OUTCOMES OF DEEP NECK INFECTION IN DIABETIC PATIENTS FROM 9/2020-6/2021
Abstract
Background: Deep neck infection is a common emergency in otolaryngology. Diabetics are susceptible to deep neck infection.Objectives: Investigation of deep neck infection in diabetics: clinical picture and outcomes.
Methods: We prospectively reviewed the records of diabetic patients who were diagnosed with deep neck infection and received treatment at Otolaryngology department of Cho Ray hospital in demography, etiology, bacteriology, treatment, duration of hospital stay and outcomes.
Results: From 9/2020 to 6/2021, we have treated 108 cases of deep neck infection on the background of diabetes: 53 males and 55 females. Dental caries is the most common cause in diabetics, and the submandibular space is the most susceptible to infection. 69.4% of hospital cases had leukocytosis at admission.
Conclusion: Dental caries is a common cause of deep neck infections in diabetic patients. Streptococcus sp is the most common bacterium. Factors affecting the length of hospital stay are high blood sugar on admission, ketosis, long time for leukocytes to return to normal, tracheostomy and any complications during treatment.
