Abstract

Abstract: Hanoi, characterized by its dense network of rivers and
lakes, plays a key role in regulating water, microclimate improvement,
and defining the identity of the “city of rivers and lakes”. However, the
rapid urbanization process has seriously degraded the waterside space.
Recent extreme rainfalls causing widespread flooding reveal the limits of
traditional drainage systems and highlight the urgent need to integrate
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) into urban renovation. The article
analyzes the current conditions of Hanoi’s waterside space and draws
on related international experiences, proposes groups of integrated
SuDS solutions including: (1) developing blue–green infrastructure such
as rain gardens, permeable pavements, ecological embankments, and
water plazas; (2) establishing intersectoral management and raising
community awareness; and (3) mobilizing financial, human, and data
resources
