Abstract

The present study investigated the effects of enzymatic pretreatment with various industrial enzymes (cellulase, hemicellulase and viscozyme) on hydrodistillation of essential oil from vetiver root (Vetiveria zizanioides L.). The results showed that pretreatment with viscozyme was highly trustworthy since yield of essential oil raised up 23 %, extraction time decreased 10 h, and the process achieved the highest yield of 1.3 % (v/w) after 14 hrs of hydrodistillation.  The optimization of conditions was employed to enhance the effectiveness in viscozyme pretreatment. Four parameters taken into the investigation were incubation time, temperature, pH, and enzyme concentration (E/S). After pretreating grounded vetiver root (<1 mm) with viscozyme at enzyme concentration (E/S) of 2 % (w/w) for 24 hrs at 50 0C and pH = 5, the essential oil yield achieved the highest value of 1.3 % (v/w).
