Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the very popular
technologies in the world today, applying heat-treated hard materials in the
mold manufacturing industry. Optimizing input technology parameters with
specific output criteria has received the attention of experts in the field of EDM.
In this paper presents the optimization of surface roughness by Taguchi method
with 4 input technology parameters: amperage (I); discharge gap voltage (U);
discharge time (Ton); discharge dwell time (Toff), one output parameter is the
work piece surface roughness (Ra). The orthogonal matrix L25 in the Taguchi
method was used to design the experiment. The results showed that, the
optimal parameter set of the single-objective problem of steel processing
SKD11 in EDM is I = 1A; Ton = 50µs, Toff = 12µs; U = 30V has significantly
reduced the time and cost of doing experiments.
