Abstract

Faults occur on medium-voltage (MV) underground cable lines can have serious consequences, including power supply interruptions, threats to community
safety, and significant economic losses. Identifying and monitoring emerging faults early is crucial. The availability of automatic underground cable monitoring
solutions domestically is limited, simple, and mainly focus on high-voltage cable. Therefore, this study proposes configuring an automatic monitoring system
for MV underground cable lines. The key of the system is a set of devices comprising sensors, signal acquisition and processing nodes placed at vulnerable points
along the cable route and cable joints. These devices measure temperature, humidity, current, and acoustic emissions caused by partial discharge (PD). The
collected data is transmitted to a server through a LoRaWAN wireless network system. In this paper, algorithms for data acquisition and processing, as well as
flexible fault alert algorithms tailored to seasonal variations and weather conditions are developed to enhance the performance of the proposed automatic
monitoring configuration for MV underground cable lines.
