Abstract

The paper looks at the history and the role of English as the second language in Asia: South Asia and South East Asia. The influence of the British East Indian Company followed by the colonization of the countries in this region has made English an important language, thus becoming the second language in these countries. After the colonial time, these countries continue to stay with English, however their attitude toward this language might vary.
