Abstract

The Ba River basin is one of the nine major river basins in Vietnam with an area of 13,900 km2. Water resources in the basin are used for the diverse needs of people, agriculture, industry, and services. However, competition for water use among sectors is increasing. Over-exploitation also leads to the risk of water resource depletion and ecosystem degradation. This study focuses on establishing the MIKE Hydro Basin model to calculate the water balance in the Ba River basin according to baseline and climate change scenarios, on that basis, it is possible to make effective water resource management and allocation decisions, while minimizing water resource risks in the context of climate change and socio-economic development. Calculation results show that, compared to the current scenario, in the future, water demand in the entire basin will increase, leading to water shortages. Therefore, specific plans are needed to resolve conflicts in water use.
