Abstract

Coastal zone is a transition area between the continent and the ocean, it always affected by interaction processes between those two areas such as rivers with waves, currents and tides of the sea. Vietnam has a significant potential of resources in the coastal zone and it plays an important role for the development of the country. There are quite number of natural resources were discovered in this zone, namely: 35 types of minerals, more than 20 ecosystems with 3 typical ecosystems are mangroves, coral reefs, and sea grass beds. In term of human system, there are more than 50% of the major urban centers of the country is located in coastal zone including 3 key economic regions of North-Central-South, nearly 30 export processing zones, industrial zones; more than 80 large and small seaports. Hai Phong became the largest port city in the North of Vietnam, center economic of services, industry, and as well as an important fisheries economic region including fishing and farming. Based on the coastal zone, Hai Phong has been developing into an economic, cultural and political center for the whole Northern Coast region; the city is one of the three growth poles of the northern economic key; the intersection of two corridors and economic belt of the Gulf of Tonkin. Hai Phong is also one of the few coastal provinces/cities of our country that have a developed economy with a high proportion of services and industry. The city has successfully applied the model and integrated coastal zone management program and has brought about great socio-economic effects today.
