Abstract

Economic relations with China play a key role in North Korea's development
strategy, especially as the country faces mounting pressure from international sanctions. As the
largest partner in trade, investment and aid, China not only provides essential resources but also
has a profound impact on North Korea's economic structure and direction. However, this
relationship is not entirely stable. Since Kim Jong Un came to power in 2011, successive weapons
tests have caused a rift in bilateral political relations, while international sanctions have further
complicated their economic relations. Drawing on trade data and official reports, this article
analyzes economic relations between North Korea and China, clarifies the importance, limitations
and consequences of this dependence, thereby contributing to explaining the movement of the
North Korean economy.
