An initial study of the industrial situation in Da Nang under the French colonial period (1888 - 1945)

Abstract

The research was carried out based on various data sources such
correspondence, archival documents, and monographs since Da Nang became a French
concession (1888) until before the August Revolution in 1945. Research results show that
Da Nang’s economy had many profound changes under the colonial period. From a city
without any industries, there had gradually been different companies and processing facilities
emerging in the city, starting with the emergence of coal mining companies and then service
industries. Under the French colonial administration’s management and domination, Da
Nang’s industry was always in an unbalanced state that was considered the common situation
of Vietnamese industry during that time.
